Trump Claims AI Only Needs Him as Its ‘Strong, Smart’ Safety Net

KEY POINTS

  • On Monday, Trump publicly criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for urging a slowdown on AI development.
  • Amodei's essay recommended pacing AI progress following security breaches, with support from Elon Musk and others.
  • Anthropic challenged the Trump administration's blacklist, which a judge later ruled illegal, and recently regained some government trust.

In a plot twist worthy of reality TV meets tech dystopia, President Donald Trump called out Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Truth Social this Monday, accusing him of pretending to be a 'perfect little angel' after Amodei’s Saturday essay urged frontier AI labs to 'pace' their development – apparently the AI equivalent of 'do your homework slowly.' Trump insists AI only requires 'a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT' for control, which, according to his shoutout, the USA has in spades. Meanwhile, AI leader Elon Musk agreed with Amodei’s slowdown call on X, ironically proving Twitter still thrives on drama. Anthropic is no stranger to courtroom drama either, having sued the Pentagon after a February blacklist now ruled 'illegal and baseless' by Judge Rita Lin. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, caught somewhere between tectonic shifts and Tweet wars, claimed Anthropic is finally 'back on the right side.' All while former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit, warning this rocket race toward superintelligent machines is more gamble than gamble-free high-stakes chess.
