Michelin Guide Expands, Still Doesn’t Cover Chicago Because Why Fix What's Broken?

KEY POINTS

  • Michelin Guide announced a Great Lakes edition covering six cities except Chicago, which has its own guide.
  • Visit Pittsburgh’s CEO said the partnership is meant to boost tourism without influencing star selections.
  • Inspectors have already started scouting and will announce the first Great Lakes stars next year.

In a plot twist no one asked for but everyone secretly needed, Michelin announced a Great Lakes edition covering Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh—conveniently skipping Chicago like an ex avoiding commitment. This new guide, unveiled by Michelin on an unknown 'today', arrives with a quid pro quo: cities pay to get fought over by tiny, possibly hangry inspectors who’ll pretend money doesn’t influence their star-studded love affair with local restaurants. Visit Pittsburgh’s CEO Jerad Bachar claims this will 'strengthen Pittsburgh’s reputation,' as if anyone needed Michelin to tell Pittsburgh food isn't just about pierogis. After 100 years of star giving since 1926 and an American embassy established in NYC/SF/Chicago since 2005, Michelin now invasively targets the Midwest, with selections due next year. Star-hunting inspectors are probably plotting which Deep Dish impersonator to crush next.
