KEY POINTS

  • San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie urged stricter autonomous vehicle regulations after July 4th disruptions involving Waymo car batteries failing in heavy traffic.
  • Lurie cited a December 2025 citywide power outage that stranded Waymo robotaxis and disrupted public transportation as further evidence for tougher rules.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also called on autonomous vehicle companies to fix issues with AVs interfering with emergency responders.

On July 7, 2026, San Francisco’s waterfront transformed into a parking lot thanks to Waymo’s robotaxis experiencing a collective 'battery nap' during Fourth of July traffic chaos, trapping shuttles and bewildered humans alike. Mayor Daniel Lurie, clearly done playing Traffic Cop for AI wannabes, demanded California regulators stop treating the city like a test track and make robotic chauffeurs prove they can perform under fire — or fireworks. Adding insult to outage, a December 2025 citywide blackout also revealed Waymo’s tech love of dramatic standstills. Even the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called out AVs for creeping on emergency responders’ scenes like uninvited party crashers. Meanwhile, Waymo insisted they ace big events like the FIFA World Cup, which apparently doesn't involve batteries dying mid-ride. With six companies—including Zoox and Motional—permitted for driverless chaos, SF says 'prove you can clear streets before you block them.'
