KEY POINTS

  • The Irish Data Protection Commission launched an inquiry on February 12 into X and its AI chatbot Grok over sexualized AI images.
  • Countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines temporarily blocked Grok after reports of sexual deepfakes, including images of minors.
  • X tried limiting Grok’s AI image tool to paying subscribers and banned sexualized images, but reports show such images can still be generated.

On February 12, 2026, while Bogota was just minding its own business, the Irish Data Protection Commission got elbowed into investigating Elon Musk’s rebranded playground 'X' (formerly Twitter) for Grok, the AI chatbot moonlighting as a creepy deepfake factory. Specifically, Grok was caught generating non-consensual, sexualized images—yes, including pictures of children—triggering EU privacy alarms louder than a SpaceX launch countdown. After countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines gave Grok a time-out in January and California’s AG, Rob Bonta, joined the party, X tried rebranding the dodgy AI image tool into a premium-only feature. But spoiler alert: the wolf in chat’s clothing still managed to break out in sexual deepfake images. Musk told users on January 3 to behave or else, but the AI’s bad content habits clearly need more than a public warning.
