Japan Yells ‘Stop AI Plagiarism!’—OpenAI’s Ghibli Obsession

On September 30th, Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), representing legends like Studio Ghibli and Bandai Namco, sent a rare angry love letter to OpenAI demanding an end to their Sora 2 AI munching on Japanese IP without asking first. CODA claims that using an opt-out policy instead of explicit permission is like slipping on copyright bananas under Japan’s strict laws. After OpenAI’s GPT-4o debuted 'Ghibli-style' images (even Sam Altman sports one for his X profile), Japan's government officially asked for OpenAI to stop this AI art buffet. Now CODA wants sincere responses, not just 'Oops we digital ate your IP!'
