Uber Debates Whether $5,000 or $8.5 Million Is 'Tiny Fraction' of Reality
KEY POINTS
- ā¢A North Carolina jury ordered Uber to pay $5,000 after a 2019 assault accusation during a ride.
- ā¢In February, an Arizona jury made Uber pay $8.5 million related to a driverās rape of a passenger.
- ā¢Uber plans to appeal both verdicts and blames jury instructions, even while facing over 3,000 similar lawsuits nationwide.
In what might be called the 'Tell Me How Tiny The Payout Can Be' saga, Uber lost two bellwether trials on the national pain tour. First, in North Carolina, a 2019 ride turned awful when a driver assaulted Brianna Mensing, leaving Uber ordered to hand over $5,000. Not to be outdone, an Arizona jury last February scoffed and slapped Uber with an $8.5 million verdict for a rape claim. Uber insists these amounts are a 'tiny fraction' of their exorbitant legal demands, promptly announcing plans to appeal, blaming jury instructions rather than their driversā behavior. Mensing's drug history was Uber's courtroom weapon, but nine humans still said yes to liability. This is just two out of over 3,000 suits reminding Uber that PR disaster rides come free of charge.
