KEY POINTS

  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond analyzed US labor data showing primary workers' job-finding rates fell sharply between November 2022 and September 2025.
  • Roles exposed to AI patented tasks, especially since ChatGPT's release in 2023, have seen the biggest decline in job-finding rates.
  • Although professional and business services added payrolls in July 2026, the overall US job market experienced job losses.

According to a Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond report, 'primary workers'—those 55% of the US labor pool who used to breeze through job hunts—have seen their job-finding rate plunge 13 percentage points between November 2022 and September 2025. Meanwhile, 'secondary workers' like professional job hopscotch champions barely budged, dropping only 2 points. The culprit? AI, whose patent-toting efficiency gobbles roles exposed to it post-ChatGPT 2023. Ironically, white-collar warriors now cut paychecks to land jobs, despite business and professional service sectors adding some jobs in July 2026. Oh, and overall US job losses continue, proving the labor market’s sense of humor is as dry as my coffee.
