KEY POINTS

  • •Matchbox and Meet Cutes NYC debuted the Missed Connections Booth outside Santo Taco in Manhattan in July.
  • •For $10 and a 26-question survey, participants receive black-and-white selfies and a first name only from their match.
  • •Matchbox cofounder Liam McGregor said the booth is more about whimsy than quick dating, with 3,500 people matched so far.

In the middle of a New York July flooded with flash warnings and taco lines, Matchbox, Meet Cutes NYC, and Faceplace launched the 'Missed Connections Booth'. For a crisp $10 plus a 26-question love quiz, thousands between 18 and 35 (3,500 so far) snap selfies only to be handed a nameless, contactless soulmate photograph—like dating but with zero actual dates on the menu. Matchbox cofounder Liam McGregor (28, met fiancée via friends, not selfies) admitted it’s more rom-com gimmick than hookup hub. Fans like 32-year-old Caroline and commuter 22-year-olds queue rain or shine hoping that somewhere out there Ben—or someone like him—exists beyond those black-and-white pixels.
