Adobe Kills Animate After 31 Years Because New Kids Need Cooler Toys

KEY POINTS

  • Adobe announced on March 1st that it will stop selling Adobe Animate due to the rise of newer software solutions.
  • Users have access to download and retrieve their Animate files until March 1st, 2027, with enterprise clients granted until 2029.
  • Adobe will maintain support for the application throughout this extended transition period before complete shutdown.

After a cheerful run starting in 1996 as FutureWave Software’s vector graphics wunderkind named FutureSplash Animator, Adobe Animate is getting the digital death sentence on March 1st. Adobe, masterminds behind the ubiquitous Creative Cloud, decided Animate no longer fits their vision, blaming mysterious 'new platforms' that apparently do animation better and probably have cooler fonts. Regular mortals get a kind farewell till March 1st, 2027, while enterprise clients—because why not differentiate?—get an extra two years until 2029 to download their animated relics. Support will limp along until those memorable expiry dates, turning Adobe Animate into a software version of a vintage VCR slowly blinking 12:00 forever.
