Mpox Declared Emergency, World Hits Snooze Button Again
A year ago, on August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization boldly declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Fast forward, and health experts are yelling into the void, frustrated that the world couldnât care less. 'Why are health experts so frustrated by the world's response?' might be the understatement of the century. Itâs like giving a kid a smoke alarm and watching them hug a torch instead. WHOâs call went out loud and clear, but the global reaction could best be described as a collective shrug with a side of denial.

Oh, Iâm sorry, did I miss the part where declaring a global health emergency actually made anyone change? The worldâs response to mpox is basically a cheesy sequel nobody wantedâsame plot, zero action, and somehow even less enthusiasm.
