Apple’s $3500 Headset? Too Big, Too Pricey, Too Forgotten

Tim Cook’s big 2023 Vision Pro reveal — a $3,500 ā€˜spatial computing’ headset that sounds like sci-fi cosplay gear for rich people — has quietly dumpster-dived into tech obscurity by late 2025. Apple, after launching it in February 2024 to resounding crickets, officially axed plans for a lighter, cheaper sequel, opting instead to chase Meta’s style with smart glasses. Bloomberg says Apple will pivot to AI glasses like Meta’s $800 Ray-Ban Displays, which have only sold a couple million units after more than a year — tech ā€˜blockbuster’ if you’re barely breaking even. Even Apple’s insiders admit the Vision Pro is 'overengineered' junk nobody signed up for. Meanwhile, Meta might accidentally out-Apple Apple by making semi-useful face computers first, and Google is lurking with copycat glasses still MIA. The real loser? Anyone who thought computers on faces would be an overnight sensation. Spoiler: the jury’s still out (probably laughing).
