ProPublica’s Diversity Party: 193 Staff, Zero Boring Stories
ProPublica, the newsroom for superhero fact-finders, proudly grew from 186 full-time staff in 2024 to a whopping 193 in 2025. Led by Robin Sparkman, who won’t rest until every ethnic, gender, and ability spectrum is elbow-deep in investigative journalism, they smashed barriers for women, vets, people with disabilities, and those who swear diversity is just “too much work.” They hired a talent acquisition manager with 10+ years experience—basically the hiring Gandalf—refining the ritual of making candidates feel less haunted by interviews. Meanwhile, their reporters triggered DOJ rewrites, Minnesotan real estate reforms, and unearthed Spanish language flubs that cost dairy workers dearly. A staff that’s 63% non-Hispanic white, 52% women, and 2% nonbinary/trans proves activism got a spreadsheet. Plus, volunteers ran a shared holiday calendar to dodge religious clashes because nothing says ‘diversity’ like scheduling Hanukkah AND Diwali lunches without drama.
