WeWork’s Guilt Trip: From Tequila Meetings to Bankruptcy Wallowing
Miguel McKelvey, WeWork’s cofounder and chief culture officer, parted ways with his workspace empire in 2020 — right after the company’s spectacular IPO meltdown, Adam Neumann’s forced exit, and a SoftBank bailout. While McKelvey nursed guilt harder than a hungover employee at a tequila-fueled company retreat, 2,400 staff (20% of WeWork’s workforce) were shown the door post-IPO in late 2019, with more casualties during COVID layoffs. Add secret office romances, drug-fueled shindigs, and code-switching woes to the mix, and you get a culture cocktail more toxic than a fine tequila hangover. Since then, Miguel’s been trying to un-wallow the guilt swamp through deep feels and breathwork instead of more tequila.
