EU Slaps US Pharma: Pay Tariffs Or Swallow Pills Harder

In a masterstroke of diplomatic irony, the European Union’s new trade deal might cost US pharmaceuticals between $13 and $19 billion as their "branded medicines become subject to a tariff of 15%," analysts grimly noted on Monday. Despite exporting the largest share of medicines to America—about 60% of all pharma imports—Europe’s latest move feels like charging admission before giving the aspirin. As the article put it, "Medicines are the largest European exports to the U.S. by value," which is rich, considering the US now pays extra just to get these pricey pills past customs.
