KEY POINTS

  • President Trump announced a 10% tariff starting February 1st on eight NATO allies—including Denmark—until the US buys Greenland.
  • Tariffs threaten recently signed European Union and United Kingdom trade deals and could increase to 25% by June.
  • Denmark and Greenland condemned the threats, and troops from NATO countries recently conducted reconnaissance missions on the island.

On a frosty Saturday that probably confused weather and politics, President Trump announced he’s slapping a 10% tariff starting February 1st on eight NATO allies—including Denmark—until America seals the deal to purchase Greenland. Tariffs spike to 25% in June, jeopardizing freshly minted EU and UK trade deals. Trump’s playing Greenland negotiator via Truth Social, demanding payment from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and the UK, claiming max protection and decades of subsidizing their security. His sidekick Stephen Miller chimed in, calling Denmark 'tiny' and unfit to defend Greenland despite NATO’s rockstar status. Denmark and Greenland protested, troops were deployed to Greenland in a 'recon mission,' and the Supreme Court is apparently jealous, deciding soon if Trump can even do this legally. Arctic drama turned economic cold war, anyone?
