Seventeen years ago in north Phoenix, Manuel Nieto Jr. stopped for cigs and Gatorade only to star in deputy drama with guns drawn, sirens wailing, and immigration checks so aggressive they made Trump’s task force look like neighborhood watch. Sheriff Joe Arpaio, self-styled sheriff of racial profiling city, used the federal 287(g) program like a BOGO deal on civil rights violations, targeting anyone looking Latino for traffic stops and raids. Despite a 2011 class-action lawsuit, 368 paragraphs of reforms, and a federal judge throwing shade harder than a desert sun, Maricopa County still hasn’t purged deputies convincing themselves they're immigration agents rather than public servants. Arpaio claims political persecution and vows, 'I’d do it over again.' Spoiler: The DOJ and ICE ghosted all interview invites.
