GOP Helps You Then Votes to Fire Your Lifeguard

Republicans love the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau until they don't. After happily sending thousands of constituents—including a chemotherapy patient and a defrauded servicemember—to the CFPB for help, they turned around and voted to chop its budget almost in half. Sen. Cornyn, who referred over 800 complaints, was notably silent when asked why he voted for cuts that threaten the agency’s existence. As Erie Meyer, the CFPB’s ex-chief technologist, put it, 'if a service member is getting screwed on an auto loan, this is the only place they can go.' Meanwhile, Rebecca Blumenthal called out the GOP for putting 'big businesses— not consumers—first.'
