Government Shutdown Kills Jobs Report, Not Job Cuts
Octoberâs job market looked like a bad date: no new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics thanks to the longest US government shutdown ever, so analysts eyeballed ADP, Indeed, and LinkedIn instead. ADPâs Nela Richardson reported a modest 42,000 private sector job gain - mostly from giants with 500+ employees, while Challenger, Gray & Christmas announced a 153,074 job-cut bonanza, the highest October since 2003, blaming AI and pandemic overhiring (Amazon trimmed 14,000 folks). Meanwhile, Indeed waved a sad flag as job postings hit 2021 lows and small-business hiring fell for the first time since January, per Gusto. Economists shmomed working with puzzle pieces without BLS data, but hey, who needs clarity when the economy is a slow-motion soap opera?
