Tesla Stops Pretending Solar Roof Isn’t Just Fancy Solar Panels
KEY POINTS
- •Tesla introduced its Solar Roof, solar panels disguised as roofing tiles, at an event in 2016 led by Elon Musk.
- •Recently, Tesla informed third-party installers that Solar Roof orders are halted though no official public announcement was made.
- •Tesla redirected the original Solar Roof webpage to generic solar panels, effectively discontinuing the tile product silently.
Tesla’s Solar Roof, the futuristic project visibly showcased by Elon Musk back in 2016 with big promises of roof tiles moonlighting as solar panels, is reportedly being discontinued, Electrek sources say. The product, which for almost a decade lived on tesla.com/solarroof like a hopeful teenager who never quite made the varsity team, has now been unceremoniously redirected to the humbler, less photogenic solar panel page. Tesla hasn’t made a public crowd-pleaser out of this decision, just nudged its third-party installer pals to stop taking new Solar Roof love letters—which means the dream of sun-powered shingles blending invisibly into a roof is on pause, ushering us back to the honest, obvious solar rectangles instead. So much for tricking neighbors with your eco-friendly clapboard charade!
