KEY POINTS

  • Russia’s Roskomnadzor blocked Roblox and Snapchat this December, claiming they enable extremist and terrorist contents.
  • The agency also restricted Apple's FaceTime, alleging it is used for coordinating terrorism and crimes against citizens.
  • Roskomnadzor cited users spreading 'LGBT information' via Roblox, legally marked as extremist in Russia.

In a shocking move this week, Russia’s internet watchdog Roskomnadzor flat-out blocked Roblox, Snapchat, and slapped 'restrictive measures' on FaceTime, accusing them of fueling ‘extremist and terrorist’ shenanigans. Yes, the same Roblox that hosts 2 million daily Russian users building pixelated theme parks got labeled a terror training camp. Snapchat was blacklisted since October 10 for allegedly hosting fraudsters and terrorist recruiters posing between selfies. Apple’s FaceTime also sulked in the detention cell for purportedly aiding undercover terrorists. Russia also freaked because Roblox spreads 'LGBT information'—which, come 2025, counts as extremism in the Kremlin’s rule book. Meanwhile, Pavel Durov’s Telegram got voice and video cut, and YouTube traffic apparently choked like a 90s dial-up. So, if you wanted to plan a plot in Russia, dialing up friends via FaceTime or December 2024 Roblox sessions might land you on a watchlist. This crackdown follows a messy March 2024 ISIS attack in Moscow killing 149, so the Kremlin's redefining terror to cover anything it doesn't vibe with.
