In an eye-opening episode of the Auren Hoffman podcast on a Tuesday that will surely go down in GPU history, OpenAI's Jason Kwon dropped the shocking truth that hoarding GPUs, even 1 million by year's end per CEO Sam Altman, doesnât guarantee AI supremacy. Apparently, the secret sauce is 'scarcity, bet selection, and organizational structure,' which sounds suspiciously like 'know what to spend the million GPUs on before they instantly disappear' as CPO Kevin Weil confessed they immediately get used. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's xAI throws down a mere 200k GPUs on 'Colossus' trying to train Grok4, while Mark Zuckerbergâs Meta brags about 'compute per researcher' like itâs the new gym membership. All this GPU bragging, yet Kwon insists compute isnât the big differentiatorâbecause in techland, just throwing money at physical infrastructure isnât a magic win button. Tough love from OpenAIâs strategist who politely reminds the industry not to confuse GPU bling with brain bling!
