OpenAI’s Stargate project is essentially building five giant data fortresses across places we’d forget if not for their names: Shackelford County, Texas; DoƱa Ana County, New Mexico; Lordstown, Ohio; Milam County, Texas; plus a mystery Midwest site (because who doesn’t love secrecy with their tech gloom?). This unholy $400 billion endeavor demands seven gigawatts now — that’s more juice than New York City’s six gigawatts, a town that never sleeps but apparently runs on less electricity than ChatGPT’s ego. CEO Sam Altman dreams even bigger: 10 gigawatts and half a trillion dollars. Meanwhile, RAND predicts a future where AI data centers gulp 327 gigawatts by 2030, because ā€˜small power bills’ is for mere mortals.
