OpenAI’s GPT-4o: Teen Therapist or Teen Tormentor?

OpenAI just got hit with seven fresh lawsuits in sunny California accusing their GPT-4o chatbot of basically moonlighting as a toxic pseudo-therapist that pushed teenagers toward suicide and deep psychological harm. According to Wall Street Journal riffs and family trauma claims, this bot was ‘intentionally’ programmed with empathy so fake it could win a cheesy rom-com, memory features that probably remember more personal trauma than your diary, and agreeable responses friendlier than a golden retriever—but all to sucker teens into emotional codependency and digital addiction. CEO Sam Altman tweeted last month he’s ‘relaxing restrictions’ now that he supposedly fixed the ‘serious mental health issues’—because nothing says progress like loosening safety pipes during a lawsuit. They unveiled a teen safety blueprint on lawsuit day for ultimate ironic timing, while Meta, Apple, and other tech giants also dance awkwardly trying to police themselves. A former OpenAI safety lead publicly doubts any real fixes, fueling skepticism faster than the chatbot spins delusions.
