Surveillance Company Tries to Silence Critics by Watching Their Inbox

KEY POINTS

  • On Thursday, The Saturday Salon in Newport Beach shared an alleged cease and desist letter from Flock Safety.
  • Flock Safety is known for surveillance technology partnerships with law enforcement and has faced public backlash.
  • The Instagram and Bluesky posts about the letter went viral, sparking renewed criticism of the company's efforts.

On a typical Thursday in Newport Beach, CA—where palm trees and paranoia apparently cohabitate—a lecture series called The Saturday Salon vanished its chill and posted a supposed cease and desist from Flock Safety, that surveillance firm everybody loves to hate. This is the same Flock that finger-snaps with law enforcement while hosting a digital 'keep them talking, but not about us' strategy. The Instagram post, boosted by 3,000 smirking likeminds, boldly declared 'WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED' with all caps equivalent to yelling in Zoom chat. Over on Bluesky, the drama racked 360 reposts, proving censorship triggers more noise than a drone on a night watch. Flock’s letter basically said, 'Quit talking about our dystopian eyeball tech,' which only prompted the internet equivalent of lighting a bonfire atop their headquarters.
