Nike Billionaire Gives $2 Billion to Cancer, Still More Frugal Than Buffett

KEY POINTS

  • On January 1, 2024, Phil Knight and his wife Penny pledged $2 billion to Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute.
  • Warren Buffett, age 95, donated over $1.3 billion through four separate foundations while maintaining a famously frugal lifestyle.
  • Jackie and Mike Bezos donated $500 million to UNICEF USA’s Child Nutrition Fund, continuing their track record from a prior $710.5 million gift.

Phil Knight, footwear overlord and cofounder of Nike, kicked off 2025 by tossing a cool $2 billion to Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute — a nonprofit presumably happier than a kid in a shoe store. This donation dwarfs Warren Buffett’s already hefty $1.3 billion in gifts spread across four foundations, although Buffett keeps rocking the same 1950s Omaha house and stateside breakfasts of McDonald’s, proving billionaires will either buy companies or frugality. Meanwhile, Mike and Jackie Bezos chipped in $500 million to UNICEF USA’s Child Nutrition Fund. Knights have loved OHSU since 2008 when they named a whole institute after themselves for 100 million fresh dollars, because subtlety is clearly overrated.
