On October 13th, 2025, California Gov. Gavin Newsom heroically signed Senate Bill 243, declaring war on deceptive AI chatbots pretending to be human BFFs. Sponsored by Senator Anthony Padilla, this law demands chatbots slap on a neon sign saying 'I’m AI, not your therapist.' Starting next year, chatbot makers must also annually report to the Office of Suicide Prevention about their chatbot’s off-switch for suicidal rants, because apparently chatbots care about mental health now too. Newsom proudly hailed this as 'first-in-the-nation AI chatbot safeguards,' right after championing Senate Bill 53, another law forcing AI transparency — because if AI can read your brain, they at least should say hello first!
