In Salt Lake City, Myriad Genetics, who annually wrestles 1.5 million diagnostic tests through a paper jungle, decided in Q4 2023 to build 'Image Genius,' an AI to tame paperwork beasts like pathology reports and Medicare keywords. Former CTO Kevin Haas dreamed of slashing prior authorization delays faster than a patience test at a DMV, but after five years as CTO, he skipped off to Veracyte, leaving the pricey mess behind. The initial 2024 version cost a fortune and was slow enough to make a sloth yawn. AWS swooped in by spring 2025, rebuilding Image Genius on Amazon Bedrock, cutting document toil from 10 minutes to 20 seconds, and saving 300 staff hours monthly. But despite this miracle, the new CTO Raj Jampa only parted with this document Houdini in 2026, while the tool plods toward oncology and mental health divisions by 2027. Meanwhile, cash flows remain as elusive as a good Wi-Fi signal in Salt Lake City's genetics lab. As senior director Shallenberg succinctly put it, 'The sooner we get cash, the better,' which is the kind of optimism only a revenue cycle veteran conveys after years of AI trials and paper cuts.
