Mike Johnson Cancels Votes While Government Darkens, Healthcare Dies
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), clearly inspired by Netflix binge breaks, has canceled all votes next week, turning the Capitol into an exclusive ghost town until at least Oct. 14, the 15th day of the great federal government shutdown fiesta. Despite passing a 24-page bipartisan 'keep-the-lights-on' bill last month ā which the Senate threw out like an expired TikTok trend ā Johnson refuses to negotiate unless Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agrees to reopen the government first. Democrats arenāt having it: Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of turning Congress into a luxury vacation club, while Katherine Clark vowed Democrats will stay in D.C. to do actual work and maybe unlock those Epstein files delayed by a missing Rep-elect Adelita Grijalva (D-Ariz.). Meanwhile, the public still waits for affordable healthcare as the shutdown drags past two weeks, proving once again American politicians can block funding but never block a good excuse to dodge work.
