Japan PM Ishiba’s Grand Exit: Defeat's Not Just A July Thing

Japan PM Ishiba’s Grand Exit: Defeat's Not Just A July Thing

On a thoroughly underwhelming Sunday, Japan’s PM Shigeru Ishiba announced he’d be stepping down after his party flopped spectacularly in July’s parliamentary election — because nothing says accountability like waiting for literally months to admit defeat. Ishiba, whose name probably sends chills through pollsters, finally succumbed to increasing party nudges demanding he take the fall for what can only be described as a historic political whoopsie. Imagine hanging onto the steering wheel after crashing your party’s election car into a political ditch in July, then only admitting you lost after your own party starts eyeing the door marked 'New Leader.' Classic delayed exit stage left.
