Despite famously rejecting the 'one white face' label, she credited Black feminists like Dorothy Pitman Hughes for schooling her on both fighting sexism and dodging racism in America’s second and third waves of feminism. Her final memoir, “An Unexpected Life,” drops this month, proving even legacy icons can still surprise us.
