FIFA Ethics Committee Told to Investigate President’s Bestest Best Pal Trump

KEY POINTS

  • FIFA president Gianni Infantino publicly called Donald Trump a 'close friend' and awarded him the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize.
  • FairSquare co-director Nick McGeehan submitted a formal ethics complaint urging FIFA to investigate alleged neutrality breaches.
  • FIFA’s Code of Ethics demands political neutrality, and violating this can lead to a ban of up to two years.

In a dazzling display of sports-politics mashup worthy of a reality TV crossover, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has publicly crowned Donald Trump his 'close friend' and awarded him the just-created FIFA Peace Prize at last Friday’s 2026 World Cup draw in DC. Meanwhile, London-based human rights nonprofit FairSquare, via co-director Nick McGeehan, threw a complaint at FIFA's Ethics Committee faster than a soccer ball hitting the crossbar, accusing Infantino of doing the political equivalent of slide-tackling FIFA's Code of Ethics. The complaint alleges Infantino violated FIFA’s mandatory 'Duty of Neutrality,' risking a soccer ban of up to two years — apparently FIFA thinks political partisanship is worse than a red card in extra time. No comment yet from the Ethics Committee, who presumably just checked their group chat.
