Christopher Nolan’s Movie Rankings Prove Even Masterminds Occasionally Stumble
KEY POINTS
- •Christopher Nolan’s films, including 'Insomnia,' 'Following,' and 'Batman Begins,' are ranked from worst to best in a recent feature.
- •'Insomnia' (2002), starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, flopped due to pacing and performances, while Nolan’s debut was a minimalist black-and-white mystery.
- •'Oppenheimer' (2023) earned Nolan a Best Director Oscar and marked his first biographical film, with famed actor Cillian Murphy delivering a masterclass portrayal.
Christopher Nolan, Hollywood’s guy who made you squint at 'Inception' and squirm through 'Insomnia,' has every film ranked from ‘meh’ to ‘masterpiece.’ The ’02 thriller ‘Insomnia’ starring Al Pacino as a cop who forgot how to act and Robin Williams as the rare villain failed to illuminate anything, overshadowed by its brighter Norwegian original. Nolan’s debut, ‘Following’ (1998), was a B&W heist of audience attention starring Jeremy Theobald creeping on strangers. Batman got rebooted (but please forget the forgettable Scarecrow), Tenet returned you to quantum headache city with John David Washington, and 2026’s ‘The Odyssey’ embraces all Nolan themes with Matt Damon armored up, apparently waiting for audiences who understand Homer and complex war stories. Spoiler alert: Nolan earned Oscars for ‘Oppenheimer’ but still couldn’t make you master Bane’s mumbling in ‘Dark Knight Rises.’
