Elon Musk’s Boring Company pitched a headline-worthy $760 million flood tunnel project under Houston’s Buffalo Bayou, boasting tunnels a modest 12 feet wide — roughly the size of Elon’s ego, not the 30–40-foot behemoths experts say are needed. Despite ignoring questions from the Houston Chronicle and Texas Newsroom, Musk shouted defiance on X, claiming his tunnels cost less than 10% of alternatives, when public records suggest it’s closer to one-sixth (still cheaper, but not quite bargain-bin prices). Republicans like Rep. Wesley Hunt hailed Elon as the 'smartest man on planet earth,' while engineers warned you can't just stack eleven tiny tunnels side-by-side without triggering a subterranean expensive-hellscape nightmare.
