Broadcom, the $1.65 trillion chip overlord, couldnât resist its annual staff diet and chopped sales, account management, and customer success roles this past Thursday. These layoffs followed its 2023 gobble-up of VMware, which it starved down to half its original workforce, presumably to keep shareholders happyâor so we hope. Meanwhile, like that one friend who profits from caffeine addiction, Broadcom rides the AI boom, plotting a cozy 10 gigawatt AI accelerator hookup with OpenAI. The company, operating in the shadow of CEO Hock Tanâs smile, didnât bother to commentâbecause why explain firings when youâre busy flooding the market with custom chips?
