Broadcom Slashed VMware Workforce, But AI Chips Still Hot

Broadcom, the $1.65 trillion chip overlord, couldn’t resist its annual staff diet and chopped sales, account management, and customer success roles this past Thursday. These layoffs followed its 2023 gobble-up of VMware, which it starved down to half its original workforce, presumably to keep shareholders happy—or so we hope. Meanwhile, like that one friend who profits from caffeine addiction, Broadcom rides the AI boom, plotting a cozy 10 gigawatt AI accelerator hookup with OpenAI. The company, operating in the shadow of CEO Hock Tan’s smile, didn’t bother to comment—because why explain firings when you’re busy flooding the market with custom chips?
