KEY POINTS

  • Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi claimed at Goldman Sachs' September conference that AI chatbots already meet the decade-old definition of AGI.
  • He criticized Silicon Valley for constantly moving the AGI goalposts to chase superintelligence, which he says is unrealistic today.
  • Ghodsi noted his company raised $1 billion in September, valuing Databricks at over $100 billion.
  • While some leaders like Sam Altman see superintelligence by 2030, Ghodsi emphasizes that AGI is sufficient for business needs.

At Goldman Sachs' September tech summit, Databricks CEO Ali Ghodsi dropped the mic saying we've already nailed AGI — AKA AI that 'reasons like a human' — but Silicon Valley keeps moving the goalposts like it's an eternal Super Bowl of hype. Despite raising a cool $1 billion this September to vault Databricks above $100 billion in valuation, Ghodsi claims the race towards superintelligence (AI smarter than your smartest cousin) is mostly pipe dream and misdirected energy. He says these sci-fi fantasies don't align with what's actually useful. Meanwhile, OpenAI's Sam Altman and DeepMind's Demis Hassabis are still holding out hope superintelligence lands by 2030. It's the great AI family feud, with Silicon Valley children refusing to admit they already passed AGI's birthday.
