Ancestryâs AI Buffet: DNA Meets ChatGPT Smorgasbord
In a 2025 tech saga straight out of Silicon Valleyâs AI reality show, Ancestryâyes, that Utah-based DNA kit peddlerâhas turned its 65 billion records across 80 countries into a gigantic AI playground. CTO Sriram Thiagarajan candidly admits they're AI's equivalent of bedazzled teenagers, using everything from Azure, OpenAI, Meta's LLaMA, to Amazon Bedrock in a messy polyamorous AI relationship. They built an 'AI gateway' â aka digital club bouncer â to pick which model dates their data best. Once taking nine months and a small fortune to digitize the 1940 census, in 2021 they cut that to nine days, thanks to their own handwriting-recognizing AI ninja. Oh, and humans still fact-check the AI just in case it decides to ghost them with fake family tales. To keep this circus running, hackathons and brown bag lunches fuel their AI obsession, proving genealogyâs new motto: why pick one when you can confuse customers with them all?
