In a dazzling display of 'tech first, skills later,' China paraded its slick new carrier, the CNS Fujian, launching stealthy J-35 jets via futuristic electromagnetic catapults—apparently skipping steam like it’s last year’s Nokia. Meanwhile, the US Navy snoozes at 11 nuclear-powered carriers, some with steam catapults older than your grandma’s fruitcake. China’s trio includes the banged-up Liaoning and Shandong, Soviet leftovers with ski jumps, topped by the shiny Fujian still wobbling through sea trials. Bryan Clark from the Hudson Institute summed it up: building ships is fast, building expertise takes decades—fitting as China’s carriers barely ventured past coastal sightseeing on Western Pacific spa weekends.
