Boston Dynamics CEO Ditches Robot Overlords Mid-Tumble Attempt

KEY POINTS

  • Robert Playter announced his immediate resignation from Boston Dynamics, planning to leave on February 27th.
  • Playter led the company through its 2021 acquisition by Hyundai from Softbank during his tenure.
  • Just days before his exit, Boston Dynamics showcased new all-electric Atlas humanoid robots performing tumbling and outdoor runs.

Robert Playter, the very human CEO of Boston Dynamics, announced on a disappointing Tuesday that he’s stepping down, effective right away—yes, immediate cliffhanger style—leaving on February 27th. Under his reign, this glorified robot playground famously survived a corporate soap opera, bouncing from Softbank’s pocket to Hyundai’s garage in 2021. Not to be outshined by a Roomba, they rolled out an all-electric humanoid Atlas robot this year, which looks like a gym rat with questionable balance, trying tumbling passes and outdoor sprints in videos posted just days before Playter ghosted. Apparently, even robot CEOs know when to flip out (literally).
