In a rainy Fort Rucker, Alabama—because why not make drone warfare an extreme sport?—Chief Nate Shae from the Pennsylvania National Guard, who moonlights as a drone whisperer, pulled off the Army’s inaugural drone-on-drone kill by sending a Claymore mine-equipped FPV drone bowling over a fixed-wing drone piloted by Chief Andrew Topits of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Months of painstaking practice in Germany, Tunisia, and Lithuania preceded the six-minute death dance, all while flying analog drones that showed less clarity than a ’90s dial-up screen. Their biggest enemy wasn’t the target but gray skies and the terrifying fact they only got one shot. Bravo, Nate.
