Hammond kick-started 'T-levels' aiming for ‘parity’ — which means equal amounts of lip service and despair. Boris Johnson chimed in 2019 to 'recognize plumbers more than philosophers' while carefully ignoring the fact that this mantra has existed longer than most Twitter trends. Rishi Sunak in 2023 added a 'British baccalaureate' to his résumé, saluting technical education’s 'immense value', followed by Starmer in 2025 pulling the plug on the 50% university ambition (finally admitting uni isn’t the universal factory). Burnham’s charm offensive in 2026 even came with the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood bragging about fewer boat crossings (thank the lord!) and increased removals. Yet, the Brits keep getting the same promise playlist, like an educational greatest hits album nobody asked for but everyone has to pretend to enjoy.
