Sydney Landlord Files Complaint Because LGBTQ+ Art Space ‘Mocked’ Christianity
KEY POINTS
- •The Divine Playhouse—once a Sydney church—opened last Wednesday as an arts venue for LGBTQ+ events.
- •Religious groups protested its opening, claiming it insulted Christian Australian beliefs.
- •In response, the landlord ordered the venue to stop ‘engaging in offensive trade.’
In a dazzling clash of sacred and not-so-sacred, a deconsecrated Sydney church-turned-arts venue called Divine Playhouse hosted an LGBTQ+ kickoff on Wednesday and promptly got slapped by its landlord for ‘insulting and mocking’ Christian Australian beliefs. The Divine Playhouse’s goal was to be a safe, inclusive space for artists to work and connect, which apparently ruffled some seriously pious feathers. Religious groups protested the opening, prompting the landlord to demand the venue stop ‘engaging in offensive trade.’ It seems the business of art and inclusion has some very conservative property managers humming hymns of complaint, proving that even deconsecrated buildings can still create consecrated drama!
