Amazon, the retail overlord with over a million robots already manning its warehouses, now dreams of unleashing bipedal bots like Agility Robotics’ Digit by 2033 to dodge hiring 600,000 actual humans. Planning to automate 75% of their U.S. operations by 2027 and axe 160,000 jobs to save 30 cents per item and a whopping $12.6 billion, Amazon wants to rebrand its robot takeover with feel-good buzzwords like ‘cobot’ and ‘advanced technology’ to dodge the public grilling. Meanwhile, Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu warns this gig economy's big daddy might soon become the job-loss champion of America.
