Startup David Upgrades to Goliath with AI, Still Loses to Meta’s Pocket Change

KEY POINTS

  • Alexandr Wang said AI has transformed startups from David versus Goliath struggles to Goliath versus Goliath battles.
  • Wang founded Scale AI in 2016, which pays thousands globally to label data, before joining Meta via a $14.3 billion deal.
  • At a Y Combinator event, Wang, Sam Altman, and Vinod Khosla highlighted AI’s role in empowering founders and a future of millions of micro entrepreneurs.

Alexandr Wang, who moonlighted as the AI whisperer at Scale AI before Meta poached him in a $14.3 billion twirl last June, claims startups now play 'Goliath versus Goliath' thanks to AI. Back in 2016, Wang's company paid thousands of global contractors to babysit AI with meticulous data labeling—basically AI’s version of dog training. At a Y Combinator event, Wang declared this AI boom is a 'once in a civilization opportunity' to dream big, while cheekily confessing that his scrappy startup days were more David versus Schwarzenegger-sized Goliath. OpenAI’s Sam Altman joined the cheerleading squad, saying it’s the best time to start up since sliced bread moved to artisanal gluten-free brioche. Tech legend Vinod Khosla predicts by 2035, AI will turn most of us into micro-CEO hustlers, outsourcing even the lawyering and bean counting to algorithms so efficient they probably ponder existentialism during lunch.
