Alaska Airlines IT Meltdown: Sky’s Closed, Flights Grounded
On a dramatic Thursday evening, Alaska Airlines grounded all flights nationwide due to a tech outage—its second major IT hiccup this year after a July meltdown that already bruised profits. The FAA extended the misery to Horizon Air with a more than two-hour ground stop. Alaska serves 140 destinations in 37 states and 12 countries but can’t seem to keep operations online, even with 30,000 employees and a social media team desperately telling passengers to check flight status and please forgive ’the inconvenience.’ Quarterly earnings showed that July’s IT fail forced a profit outlook downgrade, with adjusted earnings missing Wall Street expectations ($1.05 vs. $1.13 per share).
