Federal Judge Demands ICE Boss Showtime for Court Drama, Gets Ghosted First

KEY POINTS

  • On January 14, Judge Patrick J. Schiltz ordered the Trump administration to grant a bond hearing or release a detained immigrant within seven days.
  • By January 23, the petitioner had received no hearing and remained in detention, prompting a contempt hearing for acting ICE Director Todd Lyons.
  • Schiltz noted dozens of court order violations, calling for Lyons’s personal court appearance after lesser measures failed, while DHS and the White House declined comment.

Minnesota’s U.S. District Chief Judge Patrick J. Schiltz has officially run out of patience with acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, ordering him to show up in court on Friday for a contempt hearing after the Trump-era immigration team pulled a disappearing act on court orders. The saga started Jan. 14 when the Trump administration was told to grant a detained immigrant a bond hearing within seven days or release him—spoiler, on Jan. 23 the dude was still chilling in detention. This isn't ICE’s first rodeo ignoring court rulings, but Judge Schiltz called it 'extraordinary' enough to summon the head honcho personally, having tried lesser tactics like 'please' and 'pretty please.' Meanwhile, the White House and DHS are too cool to comment, which is them basically ghosting the situation harder than Lyons skipping court.
