KEY POINTS
- •Van Rysel developed a race-ready skinsuit with In&motion featuring airbags that deploy in milliseconds.
- •The gear is currently being tested on professional cyclists to enhance safety for high-speed road racing.
- •The UCI issued a safety gear challenge in February and expects commercial availability within two years.
Van Rysel and In&motion teamed up to create a race-ready skinsuit with a built-in airbag that inflates in milliseconds, making cyclists look like they’re allergic to gravity. This helmet alternative, currently tested on pro riders, weighs about 700 grams—because apparently adding half a kilo is the price of survival at breakneck speeds. The UCI, cycling's big boss, threw out a February challenge for better safety gear to protect riders who somehow keep going faster despite the urge to crash. Expected for general release within two years, it’s like a wearable insurance policy that screams 'I’m desperate!' whenever a crash is detected.
